Convert waste to oil, put it underground to sequester carbon.

The Problem:

Carbon dioxide levels in our atmosphere continue to rise, with current concentration exceeding 420 ppm—a level unseen in human history. While reducing emissions is critical, we also need to actively remove carbon that's already in the atmosphere to mitigate climate change effects.

The Solution:

Charm Industrial has developed a novel carbon removal approach that converts biomass waste into bio-oil through pyrolysis, then injects this oil deep underground for permanent sequestration. This bio-oil rapidly solidifies underground, locking carbon away for thousands of years in a stable form that won't re-enter the atmosphere.

Why It Matters:

Each ton of bio-oil sequestered by Charm represents carbon that was recently captured by plants and would otherwise return to the atmosphere through decomposition. Their method is one of the few carbon removal solutions already operating at scale, having sequestered over 5,000 tons of CO₂ equivalent—currently the largest volume of engineered carbon removal delivered to date.

Behind the Science:

Charm's process centers on fast pyrolysis—heating biomass to 500°C in the absence of oxygen—which converts agricultural waste into bio-oil within seconds. This oil is chemically similar to fossil crude but with higher oxygen content, making it more reactive and less stable in normal conditions. When injected 3,000+ feet underground into appropriate geological formations, it undergoes polymerization reactions that transform it into an immobile, solid carbon form.
